Decoupage seems to have had a resurgence in popularity recently, so I thought I would give it a try. After a few weeks, here is what I love about it:
1. Cheap hobby. I mean seriously, as far as crafts go, decoupaging is pretty cheap. Sure you can spend money on some extra pretty origami paper (and oh boy was I tempted). But really, all you need is an object to be decoupaged, some glue, some paper, some water, a sponge brush, and some clear coat. The most expensive thing on the list is some clear coat, although that depends on the object that you’re planning on decoupaging. I used old empty wine and balsamic vinegar bottles that I peeled the label off of. They look super chic and cool now, and they were free. It may depend a little bit on the variables, but decoupaging can be one of the cheapest hobbies out there if you’re up-cycling your garbage. P.s. reusing all that paper and glass is probably good for the environment!
2. Customizable. One of my favorite things about this craft is how customizable it really is. When I hear the word “decoupage,” I picture a box covered in pink and blue flowers. But there are way more types of paper than that. You can go sort of jokey with it decoupage pictures of food from the catalogues, or only pictures of alcoholic beverages from the magazine. You could go classy and do only text from articles, or a map. You could use leftover wrapping paper which could be seasonal or graphic. You could use old fortune cookies, comic books, even pages from your journal or old love notes. When you think about how many different types of things that are on paper, then you realize that the possibilities are endless and your decoupaging doesn’t have to be limited to the old standards.
3. Easy. Decoupaging is one of the easiest crafts I’ve ever picked up. The trickiest thing about it is making sure the paper doesn’t bubble, and making sure you give it ample time to dry in between coats. Other than that, it’s pretty self-explanatory. You gotta love that!
4. Fun. Decoupage is also really fun, and oddly soothing. I just set up a covering over my coffee table, and get to it while watching a TV show or a movie. You’ve gotta appreciate a hobby that you can engage in during a Netflix binge!
After only a little while, I’ve discovered that this is one of my favorite crafts. I highly encourage those of you that are crafty to give it a try!
