Ghostbusters came out 30 years ago! But the supernatural comedy is still really watchable, and still feels really contemporary. Here are four reasons you should find your DVD and watch it again:
1. In honor of Harold Ramis. The hilarious actor who played Egon passed away this year and that should’ve been reason enough for fans to watch it back in February. But in case you didn’t get around to it, there is still time to honor Ramis, and his hilarious and perfect portrayal of the spores, molds and fungus collecting Egon. In fact, it is worth it to spend extra time watching him. His facial expressions are subtle and remarkable throughout the film, though they are often eclipsed by the less subtle (though still great) members of the ghostbusting team.
2. Rick Moranis’ turn as Louis Tully is practically iconic, and may even be the most quotable. Whether it’s “nice doggy, want a milk bone?” or “yes have some” the strange accountant who gets mixed up in supernatural forces is pathetic and endearing all at once. Something that is hard to do, but the Moranis pulls off swimmingly.
3. The sheer 80s. There are some beautifully 80s moments for those of us who have some nostalgia for all things 80s and 90s. Whether it’s Dana’s bulky scarves and pink work-out gear, to the fact that you can see people smoking inside, to everyone’s hair, to the special effects—it’s all there in all its 80s glory.
4. It holds up. The main reason that you should re-watch Ghostbusters right now, aside from the anniversary, and the reasons listed above, is because it really holds up really well. You clicked on this, so you’re probably a fan, which means you’ve seen Ghostbusters enough times to know you love it. and you’ve probably watched the crappy sequel (which is decent-ish) a few times because you couldn’t justify watching the original again so soon. But I have given you plenty of reasons. So go! Go watch!
