Women spend hours each year putting on makeup, shaving, doing their hair, and painting their nails. With all of the time and money put into these routines, it really makes you wonder what the reason is for doing these things. The benefit of impressing other women (not men) is the reason women go the extra length to look good. Do the benefits outweigh the costs? Four reasons to ditch some, or all, of your beauty routine should make you question what you do daily to look beautiful.
Save time and money
Saving time and money is the obvious reason to quit the excess beauty practices. Women spend an upwards of $2,000 per year on makeup, hair appointments, and such. Many women spend over two hours a day taking care of their beauty business, which is equivalent to 30 days per year! These shockingly high amounts of time and money should be an apparent reason to cut yourself off from manis and pedis.
To begin saving time and money, cut certain beauty practices out of your routine completely. Go days with little-to-no makeup on, or wear your hair in a way where you do not have to flat iron or curl it. People may notice at first, but after a few weeks, it will become the normal you, and will not think differently of you or your appearance. If you cannot do without a certain product, make it at home yourself to save some cash.
Protect yourself from harsh chemicals
Let face it: Our beauty products are all made and tested in labs and huge manufacturing facilities. Many chemicals in our hair products and makeup are also in road paint and carpet manufacturing. Our skin, hair, and nails are not made to have harsh chemicals rubbed all over them. Many times we end up adding additional products to our routine to counteract the reaction from other products. For example, if you use fingernail polish remover on your nails, your hands will become dry from the acetone in fingernail polish remover, therefore you must reach for lotion to relieve your hands of the dryness.
There are plenty of products on the market that are “natural” or “organic.” These products, yes, have fewer harsh chemicals, but they still contain ingredients you cannot pronounce. The best way to avoid the harsh chemicals is to avoid using the products at all.
Gain natural beauty
If people are used to seeing you in your full makeup and hair and your hair and nails done perfectly, they will surely notice if you have not completed your routine one day. Throw this routine out the window and begin using the natural beauty that you were born with. At first, you may feel uncomfortable without your layers of products, but people are beautiful without these things, also. Natural beauty comes from feeling confident. Natural beauty is gained from smiling and positive body language. These types of things cannot be purchased. It does not take an hour to put a smile on in the morning. Leave the house everyday smiling and with confidence, and people, women and men alike, will find that attractive.
Help end media’s body image pressures
Every girl who has been a teenager can relate to the pressures that were present to look and be just like women on TV and in ads. Buying these products adds to support to these kinds of companies. You are literally giving your money to companies that create perfect bodies in the media, and continue to pressure women into believing they cannot be pretty without these products. Be a woman who teenage girls, and adult women, and look towards as pure beauty, rather than beauty that is bought in a bottle. You should end your support for companies that pressure girls to look a certain way by eliminating these purchases from your routine.
