Lately, I have been working from home, doing freelance writing projects online. Initially I felt kind of silly about it. Saying “freelance” and “working from home” seems to make other people put on an instant pity face. But when I think of the times I spent in a fluorescent office, I pity them.
1. Natural light. Speaking of fluorescents, they always gave me a pretty bad headache. Especially when they were blazing at my skull in a room with no windows. But, when I work from home, I get to enjoy the benefits of natural light coming in through my sunny window in my office. Or, if it’s a nice day, I can sit outside and work. I can let the sun shine on my skin, and a breeze roll in and I can sigh and enjoy.
2. Workout breaks. I like that when I’m at home, my posture isn’t as damaged by my clicky high-heeled shoes (self-inflicted pain, but they made me feel authoritative), and slumping my shoulders forward at a desk. Yeah I do sit at a desk, but because I’m home and no one is around, I can stretch and even take a break to do cardio or yoga. I like yoga during my work time the best. I can realign myself for another couple of hours at my desk.
3. Lunch breaks. Another great reason to work from home is you can really enjoy your lunch time. You can decide what to eat in the moment instead of looking at your packed lunch and heaving a sigh. I like to take a long leisurely lunch before getting back to work. After all, I’ve earned it. And if I’m behind on work, I can eat while I work. So basically what I’m getting at is that it’s flexible.
4. My work is portable. If I do feel like I have been in the house too much, which I think is a common concern for a lot of people who are considering working from home, I go to the local coffee shop. Or I go to the park. The thing is, if you can do it from home, that means the work involves the internet. That usually means that you can take it anywhere.
So if you are considering doing some freelance writing online, or any other type of work from home or online work, consider these perks. They may not be right for everyone, but if you like yoga and eating over the computer as much as I do, it might be perfect.
