Some days, it’s hard not to get a little discouraged about losing or even maintaining weight. It feels like a losing battle where food keeps getting more delicious and your schedule keeps getting more and more hectic, so that by the time you have time to work out…all you want to do is binge on food and TV.
But there are little ways that you can burn some calories throughout your day, and while they may not replace actually working out, they could help you boost your energy and maybe even your metabolism.
1. Fidget. Everybody has that friend, or in some cases significant other, who just won’t stop fidgeting. Those leg shakers that just bounce all day long. Turns out that doing so burns around 300 calories a day. A day! While some of us aren’t natural fidgeters, it can be thrown in a little bit if you’re conscious of it. Try bouncing your leg at your desk for intervals at a time. See how long you can go! Trying to learn to fidget is a better way to occupy your body while at work than staring at the screen and not working. You can fidget and do your job!
2. Take the stairs. Or park far away. Or take a short walk around the hall of your office or school. Do anything you can to increase the amount of time that you walk throughout the day. Make a phone call and pace while you talk. Walk anywhere that you don’t need to drive to. Not only will this burn extra calories throughout the day, but it will keep you in better shape overall if you just keep moving! Speaking of…
3. Get up and shake it out. If you are watching television, or playing video games, or sitting at a desk, set a timer to go off at certain intervals and when it goes off…stand up and shake it out! Just loosen up. It doesn’t have to be a big elaborate thing. Just wiggle your arms and legs and get some circulation going. Or you can take those opportunities to pace and do some activities from number three. But you definitely want to do this because apparently sitting is the worst thing that people do for their health.
4. Boogie. If you have some time during your day where you can dance it out, then absolutely dance! Even a little three minute dance session when you’re getting ready for work, or while your fixing up dinner can boost your mood. So put on your favorite song off of Beyonce and let yourself get a little silly. You don’t have to dance well to get the benefit of it.
Remember that any physical activity is good, so don’t think about it as burning calories so much as keeping yourself from getting to sedentary. Enjoy all the extensions of your body and let it move around!
