There are some amazing women both working on, and being depicted in comics. And while those depictions are sometimes objectifying or problematic, when it comes to the movies, they get an even worse deal! Female superheros in movies are…sidekicks or rewards. But there are some badass ladies waiting in the wings for some attention. And I would pay for any of these potential movies.
4. Hawkgirl- It seems pretty clear since the announcement of the title for the new “Superman” movie was released (it’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice), that there is going to be a Justice League movie on the horizon. While this would make most fans overjoyed (and I seriously loved the cartoon), I’m not actually all that excited. Yes, we have a Wonder Woman, but she’s in a movie with two dudes in title. And honestly Man of Steel was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. But, if they took some more time with those characters…wouldn’t it be amazing to see a Hawkgirl move? She’s a totally compelling character, and her origin story is really interesting. It could be done without looking cheesy (it would look a little like Maleficent, I think), and it would have some really cool scope. Like Superman, Hawkgirl is an alien, and she was sent to Earth by her people to check it out–so that they could destroy it for their own needs (if you’re going by the cartoon). It would be interesting to watch her struggle with her loyalty to her new people, versus her loyalty and love for her new home. Throw in Green Lantern as a love interest if you like. Boom. Awesome movie!
3. Storm- We need a Storm movie. We’ve already well established the X-Men universe. As a culture, we pretty much know the whole story because X-Men movies with the same cast have been coming out for…fifteen years? Wow. Why not do a gritty origin story like Hollywood has done for countless other male heros? And Storm’s is pretty interesting. Actually, the current movies have completely underutilized this character. Storm is really cool (and the best to play in video games). She could lead an awesome movie, and we could learn more about her.
2. Black Widow- This one might be one of the easiest to sell to execs, but it hasn’t happened yet. There are always rumors, but it would be great to actually see. Fans of the films already know Black Widow, and she has alluded to a very complicated past, particularly in The Avengers. Wouldn’t it be great to see a little of that complicated past? Agent Romanov has no powers of any kind, and yet…she’s allowed in The Avengers? She can fight alongside the Hulk and Captain America? Why? Because she is that cool, and that skilled and that smart. Would love to see a movie showing us how she got that way!
1. Wonder Woman- Diana the Amazonian princess is one of the most iconic characters of all time (not just in comics). But there still has never been a movie. This is baffling to me. Howard the Duck was made into a movie, but Wonder Woman has never seen the big screen. Apparently she will be making an appearance in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but with a title so stupid that I hate typing it, and the creative team behind Man of Steel making the film, I have little hope that she will be portrayed well. But how amazing would it be to see her flying around and punching baddies and blocking bullets with her bracelets?
How amazing would it be to see any of these movies made? There are plenty of people writing about it, and talking about it, and hopefully by adding my voice to the din, we will see a heroine get her own movie someday soon.
