One of the first things I think every little girl tries is putting on her mother’s darkest red lipstick along with gobs of other makeup that gets all over your face and makes you look like an insane person. Even as you get older it is easy to look like a maniac when wearing red lipstick. Here are the best tricks I have found to keep the lipstick on my lips and not around them.
The very first step to a gorgeous red lip is a smooth moisturized pout. One of the best ways of achieving that is by brushing your lips with a wet toothbrush to get off all the dead skin. After you dry your lips, apply your favorite lip moisturizing balm-my favorite is EOS in Sweet Mint.
Let the balm soak in while you apply the rest of your makeup.
You have a couple of options for lining your lips. You can either go with a color that comes as close to your natural lip color as possible-or if you have a liner that matches your red lipstick exactly that is also an option, but if your red liner is not an exact match for the lipstick you’re using it will look awkward.
Make sure that you find a red that brings out the best parts of your skin tone. I’m lucky and have fairly pale skin, but a somewhat neutral undertone that makes it easy to wear most colors. To find out more about your skin tone you can check out this article-I find that if I use an orange based lip color, it can sometimes make my teeth look more yellow than they are, but a blue based color makes pearly whites even whiter.
Some people will tell you that you need a lip primer, but it isn’t necessary. If you’re using the liner, that will do a great job helping your red lipstick not to feather. All that is left to do then is apply. I recommend using a lip brush, but if you don’t have one you can apply very slowly directly from the tube. The key is not to rush. A red lip isn’t something you want to apply in a hurry otherwise it will look sloppy.
You may want to consider a long-lasting lip color in order to ensure that it lasts. My favorite long-wear is L’oreal Infalliable Never Fail-just make sure to let it dry fully before moving on to step 2 of the kit.
Finally, my secret weapon for a flawless red lip is to go back around my lips with a brush and concealer. This will ensure that your pucker stands out and serves as an added assurance against bleeding. I use Clinique Airbrush concealer and eliminate the need for a brush altogether, which helps with at least a little weight while traveling.
