I’ve been dying my hair red off and on for over 10 years now. I’ve come across a couple times in my life where I wanted to get the red out of my hair. Here are 3 ways to get red hair dye out of your hair at home that I’ve personally tested.
1. Dish soap.
Dish soap is one possible way to help get rid of unwanted hair dye. I caution anyone trying to get red dye out of their hair this way because dish soap can be very harsh on your hair. This is the reason why it can help bring out unwanted dyes though. I have personally tried this method by making my own “shampoo” consisting of half regular shampoo and half dish soap. This made the solution not as strong as it would be just only using dish soap. Dish soap is stronger than shampoo so it will most likely dry out your hair. Make sure to use conditioner afterwards, especially a conditioner that has added moisturizer in it. I wouldn’t recommend using this dish soap method too many times as it could possible dry out your hair and cause it to break. It is worth to try this method since it’s very easy to do it.
2. Dandruff shampoo.
Dandruff shampoo, such as Head & Shoulders, is another way to possibly strip unwanted hair dye out of your hair. The last time when I dyed my hair red and didn’t want to keep the color I used this method. I used the all-in-one version of Head & Shoulders that had the conditioner in it as well and it helped a lot of the red dye come out very easily. The only thing about this method that I didn’t like was that my hair afterwards became extremely soft to the point that it had too much volume in it. To counter that effect I started using regular shampoo and conditioner. You just need to make sure that you don’t use shampoo and/or conditioner that’s designed for color treated hair as this will just keep the color in longer. It’s nearly impossible to get all of the hair dye, especially if it’s red, out right away but over time using dandruff shampoo greatly helps the color to wash out.
3. Dye it darker or to an ash tone color.
If the other methods won’t work for you and you really don’t want to go to a salon there’s one more thing you can do. You can dye it another color. Unfortunately it’s nearly impossible to get your hair to blonde after dying it red. You can help it to get to a non-red color by dying it with an ash tone color. Ash tones help neutralize the red but it will be very hard to completely cover the red unless you go darker. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You can go to any beauty store, such as Ulta or Sally’s Beauty Supply, and ask for advice. I once received advice to use Feria by L’oreal and I’m glad I took that advice. I ended up with a color that looked very healthy. Sometimes when trying different methods at home you can be left with either an awful looking hair color or unhealthy hair. If you are not sure about fixing it at home but don’t want to pay the price of going to a salon go to one of these beauty stores so that you may be pointed into the right direction. After a few tries and experiments you’ll know exactly what to do next time you run into a situation like this.
