My cat loves to chew on cell phone chargers and headphone wires. He prefers to chew on thin wires that break easily, so he usually ends up ruining the wire and it ends up not working properly. I know a few other people who have cats that have destroyed laptop chargers and television wires as well. They can be pretty expensive items to replace. If you have a cat who likes to bite wires, here are a few ways you can try to deter them from doing any harm to themselves or the wire.
1. Buy split loom tubing and place it around your wires. There is a split down the center of the tube that allows you to wrap it around the wire. There are different sizes of tubing that you can buy so make sure to buy the right size for the wire you are planning on using it on. You may want to purchase the 1/4″ version if you are planning on protecting thinner wires, like cell phone chargers. Split loom tubing is most likely sold at home improvement or auto stores but it can also be purchased at online retailers, such as Amazon.com.
2. If you would prefer to use something that you may already have around your house, try using regular aluminum foil, the kind that you would use to wrap food with. Cut off pieces of tinfoil to cover the wire until it is pretty thick. Do this by wrapping the foil around the wire several times. It will be hard for the cat to chew through to the wire. Also, the cat may not like the feeling of the aluminum foil rubbing against it’s teeth.
3. There are certain scents that cats do not like. One scent that I know my cat does not like is lemon. Also, pet stores sell products that have fragrances, such as bitter apple, to deter cats from picking on furniture or chewing on wires. You will want to make sure that the wires are unplugged before you rub lemon juice or any other kind of fragrance on the wire. Wait until the wire is completely dry before plugging it back in. This may not work with all cats, but it is worth a try. If the cat does not like the scent that it smells on the wire, it most likely would not want to bite into it. Be careful if you are planning on using scented essential oils as they may be harmful to animals.
