Is summer camp just for kids? Do all summer camps include hiking, zip lines and team-building games? No! Summer jazz camps and immersion workshops cater to the hobbyist or professional player who wants to get better at playing, improvising, singing or dancing jazz. Older teens and adults alike are welcome to attend three amazing jazz camp experiences across the United States.
Jazz Camp West: Eight-day Intensive Jazz Immersion Camp
2501 Harrison Street in Oakland, CA 94612
For more than 29 years, Jazz Camp West has been the go-to camp location for teens over the age of 15 as well as adults who play jazz on a professionally or semi-pro level. This is for the serious musician, the jazz dancer or singer. Even though the camp will take place in the Northern California redwoods, there is precious little hiking. Consider the setting a backdrop to workshops, one-on-one instruction, performances, star-studded faculty concerts and improvisational jam sessions that might break out at the drop of a hat. Running from June 21 to June 28, featuring 48 instructors and offering 125 daily classes, there is something for everyone. Tuition can be as high as $1,320. This camp is for the serious jazz musician only.
Tritone at Bjorklunden: Adult Jazz Immersion Camp for Professionals and Serious Hobbyists
7590 Boynton Lane in Baileys Harbor, WI 54202
Scheduled for August 3 through August 8, this five-day high-intensity jazz camp takes place at the Lake Michigan Bjorklunden Estate. With classes geared toward an adult audience, the pace is brisk but fun. Costs range from $2,230, which includes room and board accommodations for the jazz musician as well as a non-participating spouse, to $845 for the musician who wants to only pay the tuition and privately secure lodging and meals. While you do not have to be a professional jazz musician to attend this camp, it is geared for the artist who wants to do something with the music.
Jamey Aebersold’s Summer Jazz Workshops: Five-day Jazz Immersion Workshops for Adults and Mature Teens
University of Louisville in Louisville, KY 40292
Camp organizers clearly state that they are not a babysitting or hand-holding summer camp where immature campers are welcomed. Rather, these workshop camps are for jazz musicians of all ages, provided that the under-18 group knows how to behave without much adult supervision. It is interesting to note that participation is open to musicians of a variety of skill levels. Whether you are a budding improviser or a professional vocalist, there is something for everyone. Costs for the week-long camps break down to $595 for tuition, $230 for accommodations and $160 for meals. This year, the camps are from June 29 to July 4 and from July 6 to July 11. If you are on older teen who likes jazz but is not big on camping or hiking, this is the right summer music camp for you.
