I have just recently started watching Downton Abbey, and I am obsessed. The period drama is absolutely captivating, and though I am late to the game, there are still plenty of people who haven’t seen it who are getting an earful from me. Here is why:
1. Great characters. Three words: Dame Maggie Smith. There is nothing that I won’t watch her in. I really can’t think of a single thing that she has been in that I haven’t thought “Oh my god, Maggie Smith is amazing!” And that is extra the case with Downton Abbey. But in addition to that there are scores of other interesting characters. It is especially wonderful to watch an aristocratic drama where the servants are characters too, and complex ones at that! The show understands that things being around the time of WWI meant that the aristocracy is starting to mean something different, and so the servants shouldn’t be ignored. Very smartly done.
2. Shocking plot developments. If character isn’t enough, there is always the fact that the plot is often exciting and unpredictable. By now, nearly everyone knows about the shocking development involving Mr. Pamuk in the first season. I won’t spoil it for you (although it was spoiled for me). The real point in bringing it up is not only is it completely unexpected, but it sets into motion so much of what follows (as all shocking plot developments should). You genuinely won’t know what will happen next if you give this show a watch.
3. The dresses! Plot and character are all you really need for a great show. But if you’re like me, you also really appreciate a good costume. And the costumes in this show are absolutely lovely. The evening dresses make me almost want to travel back in time so that I would have an excuse to wear something like them.
So there you have it. The show has been a cultural phenomenon for a while, but are you convinced?
