Just because national women’s history month is over doesn’t mean that we should stop celebrating being a woman. Because:
1. Way more clothing options. It may sound silly and superficial, but I would be lying if I said that I don’t occasionally hear guys complaining about how boring their clothing options are. They do it to be sympathetic, I think, as they usually say it when my female friends and I are complaining about how hard it is to find clothes when your body is this, that, or the other. Though they’re halfway joking, I think there is a kernel of truth in their envy. I mean seriously, girls have endless clothing options, and though men used to have a lot more fashionable options, now they’re stuck with minimal variations of shirt, pants and shoes. Boring. You don’t have to be a girly girl to appreciate the fact that you can wear pretty much whatever you want.
2. Way easier to defy expectations. Women still have a long way to go in the world, but the good news is that the remnants (to put a light word on it) of sexism make it so that guys really don’t expect us to be able to do very much. Yes of course there are guys that think of us like equals, but it is super fun beating a sexist at something “manly” like a game of pool. Or like, getting their promotion.
3. Can do two things at once. Apparently it has been scientifically proven that women are better at multi-tasking than men are. It makes sense since we have spent thousands of years taking care of offspring that can do a hundred things at once. Sometimes three or four at a time. But it also means we can watch TV and work at the same time, and that skill will take us far now that we’re starting to have more equitable parental relationships.
So we do still have a long way to go, but we’ve got three really awesome things going for us.
