A garden can provide three of the basic things that can lead to a healthy heart. Research shown here will amaze you that a simple project such as a small garden can be so beneficial. My cardiologist says it is important for me not to be a “couch potato”, maintain a good diet, and reduce stress. A vegetable garden can assist in making that possible while providing a good hobby.
Gardening And Fitness
Gardening is considered good moderate exercise if done for 30 to 45 minutes per day. Stretching, bending, and pulling weeds are part of the process gardeners must do. This helps burn calories as well as assisting in toning your muscles.
Using a tiller for planting and weed removal requires some effort and definitely removes “couch potato” behavior from your life. Many times I see folks that look too old to walk working in their gardens. Their actions doing this hobby are proof that gardening can be good for you.
Studies suggest that gardening is a better stress reliever than many other activities. The sounds, smells, and sights of nature help us escape from troubles at the office. I love the smell on my hands after touching the leaves of tomato plants while picking the fruits of my labors.
Mix some flowers into your vegetable garden to create some extra stress relief. I try to put a sunflower in the garden to bring about a smile. Escape the bad news seen on TV and instead watch a plant grow and produce something to enjoy.
Eat Your Vegetables
I don’t know of a mother in the world that was not quoted as saying to her kids “eat your vegetables.” There is a reason for that. Look at the chart of vitamins and nutrition on the website of the FDA for our federal government. Vegetables are truly good for your heart health. They are low in calories and fat.
I am not aware of a plant in the garden that sprouts hamburgers and French fries. By planting your own garden you control your own health better than ever before. There is no question about whether it is organic, and the crisp freshness requires fewer ingredients in cooking to create good flavor.
Be kind to your heart and take advantage of the three things a garden will offer for better health. Even a few pots of tomatoes on a terrace or patio can be good.
