The 21st Century is more than a time period of advanced technology to entertain and cure disease. Advancements we see can help in other aspects of life. One such ever evolving activity is one of the most traditional things in life, making friends. Something we never thought much about in our younger days, making friends outside of the school system or your ongoing social circles is rarely easy.
Admitting you have trouble making new friends can be a kick to your ego. Keep in mind many people have these same problems. Luckily there are a few simple nontraditional things you can do in hopes of making a new friend instead of hoping they sit next to you in math class.
The Craigslist stigma that everyone on there has herpes or a hatchet is untrue. Many people are decent folk just looking for a friend. However, always use common sense. Any suspicion that they may be someone with a cabin deep in the woods and you should probably cease contact. Your best way to make friends on Craigslist would be through a common interest. Look for someone to create art with or to attend a sporting event.
Finding love on Craigslist is far different than finding an activity partner. Keep the love for spontaneity and stick with using Craigslist to find your new friend to play basketball with. My personal success, two of my really good friends were made off Craigslist through our shared interest in writing.
A big positive about Meetup.com is you already have your common interest thrown right out there in the open. This website is less about making a friend and more about making a group of friends by joining the community. The website has a wide variety of interests and you can join as many as you want.
Unfortunately this is best for already social people. As someone who does not enjoy getting tossed into a group of people than has expectations placed on socializing, this is not something for the more introverted among us.
Movie premieres, sports autograph signings, concerts, or anything else where you will be surrounded by people with a common interest or fandom is the perfect place to make a new friend. Singing karaoke at the local bar does not count. You can make friends that way, but your love of a Journey song is not as deep as it may seem on a drunken Thursday night.
For a friendship lasting longer than a few hours at the local bar, you are better off looking for rarer events. The best thing you can do when making new friends is have them come from all over the place, which means they will have different experiences leading to more interesting good times together.
