We are at that time of year when New Year’s resolutions have taken a turn for the worse and people are generally returning to their usual routines. But it doesn’t have to be this way! Here are 10 things you can try this year that will help renew some of the ol’ humdrum and help keep your “New Year, New You” promises alive.
Give up something – for good. Give up sugar in your coffee, eating fast food, hitting the snooze button, or whatever tickles your fancy. Give yourself a challenge!
Find a pen pal. Recently an old friend and I reconnected through writing letters (yes letters, on actual paper with a pen and no computers involved). Neither of us is very good at talking on the phone regularly, so this has been a great way to stay in touch.
Don’t buy anything brand new. Try instead going to yard sales, resale shops, or online trading sites to get clothes, furniture, and anything else you are looking to buy this year. This can help cut back on frivolous spending.
Join a community group. I challenge you to put down the phone and to use your time to better the community in which you live. There are dozens of different groups, local, national, and regional, that you can check out. Find one that fits your interests and give it a shot.
Recycle. Seriously, it doesn’t take much time, can cut down on your garbage, and helps the earth.
Try something scary. This something can be small or large, depending on what your definition of scary is. Maybe it is skydiving, or trying a new type of food, or trying to overcome a fear. You never know what kind of awesome things you might find in the process. This is a great lesson to teach to kids also, which can help them build self-confidence and a sense of adventure.
Cook new foods. Stuck in the same old dinnertime rut? Now is a great time to try new things. You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to try new foods. Try one new food at a time with your usual staples, or try one new dinner every couple of weeks. Take turns picking a new food and you can include others in this challenge too!
Plan to pay off a debt. Trust me, whether it is student loans, a car, or credit cards, you will be doing yourself a HUGE favor if you pay off your debts as soon as possible. Pick a debt and make a plan to pay it off early.
Spend more time outside. Soak up some rays (but take care of your skin too). The vitamin D and sunshine can be an instant mood booster and a zap of motivation.
Cut back on TV time. Instead of watching hours of Netflix marathons, pick a project, tackle some cleaning, or spend time with others.
