Do you get heartburn? Heartburn is incredibly painful and stressful, but luckily there are easy home remedies that will give you relief. Next time you get heartburn, try any or all of the remedies that work for me and my family.
Drink Water With Lemon
The minute you feel heartburn come on, make yourself some water with lemon – any temperature is fine. Water with lemon alkalizes your body and helps digestion, including acid reflux. If you are prone to heartburn, drink water with lemon while you eat your meals. Just a squeeze of fresh lemon in a full glass of water is enough.
Snack on Raw Almonds
It’s hard to imagine wanting to snack when you have heartburn, but raw almonds can actually reduce or eliminate your heartburn. Almonds contain an amino acid that helps reduce stomach acid and actually heals the stomach lining. Keep almonds in the refrigerator, and grab a handful whenever you feel heartburn coming on. Almonds are also a great heartburn fighting snack to travel with.
Lay on Your Left Side
Years ago, a nurse friend told me to lay on my left side for heartburn, I thought she was crazy. However, I noticed that my symptoms went away more quickly than usual, and now there is evidence that lying on your left side for heartburn does work. It may take a while for you to find relief with this method, so make sure you lay down in a comfortable way. I especially recommend trying this as a sleeping position when you have heartburn.
Chew a Piece of Gum
Chewing gum is actually one of the most effective cures for heartburn. By chewing gum, you get fluids back into the stomach, neutralizing the acid. Keep sugar free gum nearby, and pop a piece whenever you get heartburn. This is an especially good remedy for professional and formal situations, as it is very discreet.
Strike a Yoga Pose
Yoga is my favorite remedy for digestive problems, and there are a few yoga poses that can help alleviate heartburn. If you already practice yoga, try cat pose on your hands and knees, warrior I and II lunges, or a sitting spinal twist. If you don’t practice yoga, it’s probably not a good idea to start in the middle of having heartburn. Instead, learn a few basic moves when you feel better and be ready to use them when acid reflux strikes.
