In 2009, Nigerian Soul Singer, Nikki Laoye, made history by being one of the first musical artistes from the African nation of Nigeria to be featured on American network BET via their showcase program ”My Chapter and Verse,” this was sequel to the release of her debut single ”Never Felt this Way Before” in 2006, which earned her rave reviews as a leading female vocalist in Nigeria.
Nikki Laoye has constantly shown her versatility and eclectic style of music ever since she came on the Nigerian Music scene, sharing the stage with international artistes like Kirk Franklin, Chanelle of Tri-ni-tee 5:7 and the legendary R & B singer Mary J Blige. In 2013, she was one of the headline acts at a Memorial Concert held in honor of African political hero, Nelson Mandela, and her performance on the night was dubbed as one of the most captivating, as she floored everyone with her vocal dexterity and captivating dance steps.
She further enhanced her credentials as an important singer in the Nigerian music industry with the release of the soulful ballad ”Only You” in 2013, which won her the Best Female Vocal Performance award at the Headies 2013, Nigeria’s most credible award for excellence in music; this she won ahead of some of Nigeria’s finest female musical talents including Waje, Niyola and Seyi Shay (ex-member of girl group ‘From Above’).
However, the release of her latest video in April 2014, has gotten not a few tongues wagging, with the infectious harmonies and captivating dance moves, ”1-2-3” has been tagged as one of the best dance videos out of Nigeria in 2014! She captures some of her finest moves from her stage performances and wraps them up in this colorful and addictive video. It also surprised many who had no idea the singer could dance as well as she sings.
